SFU Biomass Facility

Location: Vancouver BC

Area: 20,185 ft2 (1,875 m2)

Status: Design Completed under previous firm Studio B Architects

A new Biomass Central Energy Plant (CEP) is proposed to be constructed and operated on Burnaby Mountain to supply thermal energy to SFU and UniverCity residents as part of the Neighbourhood Utility Service (NUS), currently serving customers within the UniverCity community. The project is developed in partnership between the Owner, SFU and the SFU Community Trust. The Owner will be responsible for the design, construction and ongoing operation of the plant.

The project is conceived as two separate but supporting programs; an Education Centre and a Processing Plant. The siting of the project is considered to be a “bridge” between the upper road and lower road surrounding the campus. The site is heavily wooded and offers beautiful views from the Education Centre facing south. The Education Centre is also conceived as a transparent box floating above the forest floor – a ‘tree house’ nestled in the woods.
